Orvieto

From Vernazza we drove the 400ish kilometres to Orvieto through beautiful Tuscany. Even though the majority of the driving was on the Autostrada the scenery was still beautiful. We waved to Lucca as we went past with fond memories of our trip there at Easter still in our hearts.

We had a bit of time so we stopped in at Pienza for lunch. It's a tiny little Baroque town that was significantly improved when one of the Pope Pius's (number 2 I believe) set up shop for a while. We then stopped at Montepulciano which I was sure we'd visited before but then realised that I just really like their wine which is why it was ringing a bell.

I feel like I could easily live in a little Tuscan village - not Montepulciano though, the streets are way too steep.

Then on to Orvieto where we had two nights but probably didn't need them both. A beautiful Umbrian town which isn't dissimilar to a Tuscan town with a pretty special Duomo that contains some Signorelli frescoes. Mum had said they contained 'erotic' bottoms and I had doubted how that was possible, but no, there they were. Wikipedia also tells me that some of the frescoes are anti-Semitic, so there you go: gay Jew haters.
