Since arriving, we've primarily been trying to figure out how it is we get to live here for a year or two (deep breath parents, that wasn't an announcement of our intentions). It almost goes without saying that New York is one of the great cities of the world and it has been particularly kind to us making our fleeting visit seem even shorter.
Activities have included:
- The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
- Tenement Museum
- Drinking in dive bars
- The Highline
- The Whitney Museum of Modern Art
- Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Brooklyn Bridge Walk
- 9/11 Memorial Museum
- The New Museum
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is pretty fantastic - it's a retired Aircraft carrier with a submarine and loads of retired fighter jets. Highlights included the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and the Space Shuttle Endeavour
The Tenement Museum is an old Tenement building that one can do various tours of to gain an understanding of the story of immigration to the US. It's pretty amazing, except when you have a blinding hangover after countless picklebacks the night before and they utter the dreaded phrase: 'and now we're going to do some role playing.' I nearly ran screaming from the building but just mumbled my way though instead. Americans love that shit as well and got really into it making it just that little bit harder.
The 9/11 Memorial Museum is really quite exceptional. It's done tastefully and really takes you back to that day. Excellent use of multimedia. I managed to stay dry-eyed but only just.
The New Museum has 3 floors of a Jim Shaw exhibition that was just amazing. I was previously unaware of him but after a strong recommendation from Chris (Punky) we went along and were duly impressed.
However the best bit has been having the opportunity to hang out with
Isabel, Dan and Chris. We love all you guys and it's been momentous catching up. Our dive bar experience with Chris will go down as legendary (special shout out to our barmaid Lisa) and, well, I'm a little concerned that I'll taste pickle juice every time I see Isabel and Dan now but it was worth it!
And that's it for NYC. We fly to San Francesco tomorrow morning. We love you NYC and will be back.
