Napoli

I've wanted to come to Napoli for quite a while now - it's no secret I'm a sucker for an old city state. But it has poured with rain for a large part of our stay making enjoyment of it a bit of an uphill battle.

We've seen a few churches (obvs), the highlight of which was definitely Cristo Velato. It's certainly the only pre-modern sculpture that holds it's own against Michelangelo's David in my mind. There was a Caravaggio in there as well somewhere.

Having just been to Pompeii, we also went to Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli which contains a lot of the artefacts removed from the archaeological site. The exhibit even includes a dirty section of paintings taken from brothels in Pompeii. It was pretty hilarious hearing an Italian tour guide giving deadpan descriptions of pornographic scenes to middle-aged women: "And here the Pan is copulating with a goat."

So this is it, our last stop on our Italian adventure. We fly to New York tomorrow and say goodbye to Europe for what will probably be a long time.

Leaving Europe makes the journey feel much more like it's Australian bound and with that some doubt about whether or not we've made the right decision. Up until now, it has just felt like another European getaway from our London life.

But it's 'destination: Melbourne' whether we like it or not... via a couple more places though of course.
